CBD & Sobriety: A Helpful Relationship

Hundreds, if not thousands of studies, have been conducted on the correlation between the use of CBD, the naturally occurring, abundant cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, and its positive impact on those who suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and even seizures. What we need more of, however, is research that explores the connection between the use of CBD and its impact on people’s sobriety.  Studies conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH) have found correlation between working toward sobriety with the help of CBD, but we need more.  That’s our mission.

The Science of CBD and Sobriety

As aforementioned, compelling scientific evidence has revealed that CBD is effective in the treatment of some substance abuse related symptoms, such as anxiety and depression; symptoms which are experienced by many who are trying to become sober. Addiction is classified as a disease; a disease that comes with a likely chance of relapse and/or remission. In a report from 2014, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported that over 20 million Americans needed some sort of treatment for their addiction.

Perhaps even more disturbing, according to a 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health more than half of the U.S. population, aged 12 or older, reported binge drinking during a one month span.  Behavior like this is a high-risk factor for developing alcoholism.

Another recent study that was performed on rats at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, discovered that the rat’s brain’s serotonin receptors are sparked by CBD and the result was a reduced drug-seeking behavior. During this study, CBD was given to the rats after they were given a combination of cocaine and alcohol. After the five-month study, the results showed after the CBD left their systems, the rats did not show any drug-seeking behaviors.

Because CBD is non-habit forming and isn’t psychoactive, it may serve as a solution for reducing the cravings and anxiety experienced by people who suffer from drug and/or alcohol addiction, especially during the withdrawal phase. CBD’s capacity to regulate the body’s dopamine receptors is the key to providing relief for the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as excessive hunger; sleep issues; lethargy; muscle pain; confusion and disorientation; nausea; mood swings; and cold sweats.
