We, at Exact Nature, are not your typical CBD manufacturer. Alcohol is probably the most readily available addictive product out there. It’s legal; you can find it on every corner; in most homes; in most restaurants…it’s everywhere. Did you have a tough day at work? You’ve probably had a drink. Celebrating a special occasion? You’ve probably had a drink. Alcohol knows all the tricks. It de-stresses you and it helps you have a great time…a double-edge sword. It’s when you use alcohol as a crutch, whether it be to de-stress or make social situations even more fun, that problems arise.
The Recovery Centers of America reports there are both physical and psychological effects that make alcohol addictive. From the physical viewpoint, alcohol stimulates the brain to release endorphins and dopamine. These are chemicals that promote satisfaction and pleasure. Alcohol also acts as a natural painkiller. Genetics also play a role in alcohol addiction. People who are genetically susceptible to higher levels of endorphins and dopamine release are more likely to become addicted to alcohol. When the brain’s reward center is worked up, the consumer wants to repeat the feeling of satisfaction the alcohol provides. While people may want to stop drinking, they are easily deterred due to alcohol’s ability to adversely affect self-control, impulse, and decision making, making it easier to relapse.
From the psychological viewpoint, alcohol addiction is a behavior that is learned over time. One’s personal morals and beliefs are major factors in controlling an alcoholic’s path to recovery and if they will be successful. If someone doesn’t think they have a problem, they see no reason to seek treatment and the addiction continues. Stress is another key factor that contributes to alcohol addiction. People drink to dull the feelings of stress, but this practice can turn into a coping mechanism that can’t be undone. Particularly important, studies have shown that people who are dependent on alcohol also have a greater chance of having mental health disorders. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 20% of Americans who suffer from an anxiety or mood disorder also suffer from an alcohol or substance abuse disorder.
There is no clear-cut cure for addiction and CBD oil alone will not cure addiction. However, some studies have shown that using CBD oil might have a positive impact on people struggling with anxiety, depression, or PTSD; all disorders that can increase the risk of the development of a substance use disorder. Because symptoms of these disorders can be debilitating, many people turn to drugs or alcohol to self-medicate rather than seeking medical treatment.
While someone may want to stop drinking, as stated previously, alcohol compromises impulse control and decision making, which makes relapsing more likely. In a review published in 2015 by the National Institutes of Health, some studies have linked the use of CBD with calming those feelings of satisfaction and reward, making it easier to avoid the temptation to drink. In a study conducted on humans, 10 healthy individuals were given alcohol alone or a combination of alcohol and CBD. While the CBD didn’t improve the subjects feeling of being “drunk”, it did lower their blood alcohol content.
With all that we know about the benefits of CBD on those suffering from anxiety and depression, it may be reasoned that CBD could be beneficial in combating addiction. While the study only tested the effects of CBD on the intoxication phase of addiction, there was no data on the withdrawal and relapse phases. With CBD being a natural treatment, more research is needed to determine and find concrete evidence that CBD positively impacts the road to alcohol addiction recovery.
