CBD FOR SLEEP
A third of adults—millions of Americans—don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. In a recent nationally representative Consumer Reports survey of 1,267 U.S. adults, almost 80 percent of Americans say they have trouble sleeping at least once a week.
About 10 percent of Americans who reported trying CBD said they used it to help them sleep, with a majority reporting that it worked. Those surveyed indicated that they did not use CBD as a treatment for insomnia, but rather as an alternative natural method to help calm anxious thoughts that often delay or interrupt natural sleep.
For centuries people have been turning to cannabis for its ability to help with sleep and other health benefits. It’s mentioned in the Atharvaveda, a Hindu text that dates back to around 1500 BC, and its use for inducing sleep is described in a 1200 A.D. Chinese medical text.
Fast forward to today and millions of Americans take CBD to get a good night’s rest, and to wake afterwards without the grogginess as a small-but-growing body of scientific research provides support for CBD as a sleep aid and an effective alternative to pharmaceutical medications.
Scientists say CBD interacts with a circuit of receptors throughout the brain and body called the endocannabinoid system. They believe CBD works through these receptors to normalize the body’s sleep/wake cycle, while helping with many of the issues that led to the poor sleep like a restless mind, depression, and pain.
A study published in the Permanente Journal (2019) consisting of a series of clinical trials assessed the extent to which CBD benefits people with anxiety disorders. Seventy-two adult volunteers suffering from anxiety and poor sleep were selected for the trial. Of the 72 volunteers, 57 (79.2%) showed a significant decrease in their anxiety levels within the first month, and sleep quality and duration also improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%). The report indicated that the results fluctuated over time, however, and that minimal side effects were observed in three patients.
CBD is considered to be a safe, non-habit-forming, non-intoxicating, natural sleep aid and, for these reasons, many prefer it to prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
CBN (Cannabinol)
CBN, short for cannabinol, is one of the cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Not to be confused with CBD (cannabidiol), CBN is offered in Exact nature Zzzs products because of its mild sedative effects. CBN will not get you high but it will relax you.
Cannabinol, like CBD, interacts with the endocannabinoid system, and according to the national Center for Biotechnology Information, and has potential immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties. CBN was the first cannabis compound to be isolated from cannabis extract in the late 1800s.

We can all agree that quality sleep is critical if we are to function at our best and achieve our full potential. It fortifies our immune system, stabilizes our mood, increases our energy levels and motivations, and helps with our general well-being.
As many report, CBD helps their sleep by easing their anxieties and worries, often at the root of our poor sleep. There is a significant amount of research on CBD’s potential for better sleep and the results are very promising, suggesting that CBD is a safe and natural way to sleep better. Even so, additional research is needed.
